Commissioned by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in 1632 and completed by 1648, the Taj Mahal is a mausoleum for his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal. Located on the Yamuna River bank in Agra, it fuses Persian, Timurid, and Indo-Islamic styles into a symmetrical white marble monument. Calligraphy, pietra dura floral panels using semi-precious stones, and intricately carved jali screens create an intricate and mesmerizing effect.
